Kajmakchalan or Machnik – the highest peak of Nidzhe mountain. It is located on the southern border of Macedonia, with a height of 2,521 m. Among the Bulgarians, the peak is known as Borisov Grad, and among the Serbs as the Gate of Freedom and the Threshold of the Motherland.
From the top you can see Ostrovsko Ezero and Petersko Ezero in Aegean Macedonia, as well as the area of Mariovo in Macedonia. Near Kajmakchalan are the villages of Skochivir from the Macedonian side, as well as the village of Cegan and the ski center “Nidze” (Voras) from the Greek side.
During the First World War, heavy fighting took place on Kajmakchalan between the Bulgarian army, on the one hand, and the French and Serbian armies, on the other, as part of the Macedonian front, known as the Thessaloniki front. Moreover, only in the period from September 12 to 30, 1916, over 4,600 soldiers from the Serbian army died in the fierce fighting on the summit. A large number of Macedonians from the local population in Mariovo and from all over Macedonia were mobilized in the composition of the two warring armies at the front. In memory of this event, in the church “St. Ilia”, located at the very top, there is a dedication written by King Aleksandar I Karađorđević. Until recently, in the church, in a special urn, was the heart of the Swiss forensic scientist, publicist and professor, Archibald Rice.
