Mountain Pass Sheremetnica – Peak Medenica

Honey tour of Medenica – the most beautiful and picturesque peak of Mount Bistra. We wondered why the peak is called Medenica – now it is more than clear to us (Med = Honey). Mavrovo and Mavrovo Lake are just one part of the whole beauty of Bistra.

Medenica is the highest peak of Mount Bistra, its altitude is 2163 meters. It is located on the western part of the main mountain ridge of Bistra, in the immediate vicinity north of the village of Galichnik. It is led by a well-marked hiking trail from the village of Galichnik, and can be climbed from the village of Janche in the valley of River Radika. From the top of Medenica there is a view of the whole mountain Bistra, Mavrovo Lake, Korab, Deshat, Shar Mountain and Stogovo Mountain.

We decided on the easiest variant: Mountain Pass Sheremetnica – peak Medenica (4 km) and an altitude difference of 523 meters. There is another trail from the village of Galichnik in the length of 5 km and height difference of 700 meters.

From Skopje to the mountain pass Sheremetnica on Bistra we drive a total of 105 km, and at Mavrovo we split for the village Galichnik. The road to Galichnik is freshly paved except for a small section at the beginning, but quite suitable for a passenger vehicle. On the map on the right (Zoom-In / Zoom-Out) you can find exactly the mountain pass Sheremetnica where we leave our vehicle and continue on a dirt road. We move on the dirt road without serious slopes, and after 1.8 km we split on a mountaineering trail where the slope increases seriously. We climb the first rock and in front of us opens a magical view of Medenica – grandiose and beautiful. We climb the ridge from the east side and enjoy the beautiful views to the peaks Golem Krchin, Velivar and Rudina to the west and Golem Korab to the north. At the very top we enjoy the beautiful panorama of Mavrovo Lake and the whole region of Mount Bistra.

This trail is also ideal for beginners, families and children. The only problem is the increased uphill in front of the peak, but the path is short and easy to overcome. At the very top be careful with children due to the configuration of the peak and the presence of abysses. If you want to conquer Medenica in winter conditions, it is possible only in the framework of an organized mountaineering tour, appropriate winter equipment and in the presence of a certified mountaineering guide.
