Mavrovo – a village in the Municipality of Mavrovo and Rostuše, located on the shore of Mavrovo Lake. The village is one of the most famous winter tourist centers in Macedonia.
The village of Mavrovo is located within the largest national park in Macedonia – Mavrovo National Park – on the southern shore of Lake Mavrovo. It is located under the slope of Mount Bistra at an altitude of 1240 meters, which makes it a mountain village. According to the records of Gjorche Petrov from 1896, at the end of the 19th century, Mavrovo was a scattered and fragmented village so that its tour took about 1½ hours. It was divided into 8 neighborhoods: Nenchevi, Vlaovci, Kichikovci, Bajramovci, Shamamovci, Sharkovci, Aricevci, Feshekovci. At that time, Mavrovo was divided into two parts: Gorni kraj and Dolni kraj, where the first one was located in a valley called Recishte, and the lower one in a valley on the plain. A stream flows along Recchiste, which collects water from the surrounding mountains, and is lost in the Mavrovsko Pole. Mavrovo was the last village of the Tetovo kaza in the south-southwest of Tetovo, from where it was a 10-hour drive.
The name Mavrovo means Black Field, it was given to the area after some great battle in the past. The Mavrovsko (Black) Field was submerged in 1953, in order to make the famous artificial Mavrovsko Lake. Today, in this context, the proof is the old village church of Saint Nicholas, which can regularly be seen submerged in water.
According to a legend, a terrible battle took place here in the past, in which many soldiers died, which is why the place got the name “Mavro” i.e. “Black” (field). The most probable is the legend according to which the Mavrovunci (Crnorunci – Crnovolnci), Vlachs, who raised sheep with black fleece, where the name of Mavrovo comes from, used to come and live here. According to the records of Gjorche Petrov, the name of Mavrovo derives from the Turkish word mav (maf), i.e. a place that has nothing and recognizes nothing above itself. That the name of Mavrovo came from the word mav/maf is also confirmed by the tradition of the inhabitants recorded by Tomo Smiljanic – Bradina, according to which Ayredin Pasha made the village maf (pardoned it) because it joined Dalip Bey from Debar. Within ethnic Macedonia there is another village named Mavrovo which is located in Kostursko in the Aegean part of Macedonia.
