Lazaropole (in the local dialect as: Lazoropole) – a completely displaced village in the Municipality of Mavrovo and Rostuše, located in the Mijak district.
The origin of the name Lazaropole is connected with the legend, which is maintained as a tradition, the villagers from Glavino Selo fled from the Turks and hid in the Kalina cave, where they were betrayed by “mad Kalina” and the Turks suffocated them with the smoke from the burning fire. Only one Lazar escaped from the cave from which he came out on the other side into the field where he founded a new village. From his name Lazar, who went out into the field and founded the new village, the name Lazaropole was born.
This village is quite specific, because at the beginning of the 20th century it had over 3,000 inhabitants. It is located in the area of Mijak, in the southern part of the territory of the Municipality of Mavrovo and Rostuše, on the slopes of the mountain Bistra, whose region touches the area of the Municipality of Kichevo. The village is mountainous, located quite high at 1,300 meters above sea level.
The village is located on a high field (above 1,300 meters), through which the Lazaropolska River passes, when it makes its way to the Mala Reka valley. Due to the steep part of the Mala Reka valley, the village is completely invisible. The location itself is very favorable, and there are caves at the ends of the field.
Kalina Cave – a cave located on Mount Bistra, near the village of Lazaropole. It consists of one meandering channel with a length of about 300 meters. In its initial part, the recent cave fauna was investigated, during which an endemic representative, Troglophilus Lazaropolensis, was found. According to the categorization of caves in Macedonia, Kalina Cave belongs to the category of important caves.
