Beach, chatter of swimmers, Ohrid fair or Prespa tranquility.. It is time to “escape” to a quieter place where you can enjoy the beauties of Lake Ohrid, Prespa and the beautiful Galicica at the same time.
If you are in Ohrid, it is easy: from Ohrid to the crossing of the mountain Galicica (more precisely Lipana Livada) you are only 38 km away on a well-paved road, and after passing the village Trpejca, you turn left towards NP Galicica (in season you will probably need to pay a fee to enter the national park). Call the National Park administration in advance to ask if the road is open for traffic because in several places on the road snow drifts of up to 3 meters are possible that last until the beginning of the summer period.
If you start from Oteshevo or Stenje (Lake Prespa), to the crossing of the mountain Galicica you are 15 km drive away along a picturesque mountain landscape. Caution: snowfalls that last until the summer months are possible on this side as well.
The hiking trail to the top of Magaro (2255 m), as well as to the other higher peaks – for those who feel ready (Vir 2288) start at a location called Lipana Livada (marked on the map to the right Zoom-in / Zoom-out) where there is a makeshift dirt parking for several vehicles.
The trail immediately enters a beautiful forest area and after 1.5 km. hiking we come out of the forest where the so-called Zli Dol – a place that until the late summer months retains a large amount of snow and movement is quite difficult. After 0.3 km. we pass Zli Dol and reach the crossroads where there are 2 options: left and right path which are the same in length and weight (approximately 2 km). The best option is to make a round hike in order to visit most of the locations that offer the best view of both lakes. No matter which option you choose, the sights are fantastic. We climb the last 2 km. with a height difference of 300 m. and we conquer Magaro – the only peak in Macedonia that offers an amazing view of our two most beautiful lakes.
In our opinion, this trail is for the whole family: only 4 km in length and 670 meters in height difference. Not sure if you are ready: spend 1 weekend from Sredno Vodno to Vrv (Krstovar) and that’s it. The only thing you need to pay attention to: Go early by 09:00 at the latest, and come back, if you do not get on the top, by 13:00 at the latest. Read more in Tips.
