Dojran Lake (in Greek: Λίμνη Δοϊράνη, read: Limni Dojrani) — a lake shared between the Republic of Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. It is the smallest tectonic lake in the Republic of Macedonia. The lake covers an area of about 43.1 km2. The western, larger part (about 27.3 km2) belongs to R. Macedonia (Dojran Municipality), and the eastern, smaller part (about 15.8 km2) of R. Greece (Kukush Municipality). In the vernacular, the lake is also known as Dojranski Gjol.

Dojran Lake is a eutrophic lake, due to the large production of organic matter. The animal world is represented by invertebrates (protozoa-single-celled animals, sponges, worms, molluscs, arthropods, insects, etc.), as well as representatives of vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). 12 faunal endemics have been registered in Dojran Lake. Out of 15 species of fish, one species is a local endemic. Some invertebrates (notably dragonflies) and several species of birds are on the CORINE list. Dojran Lake is known for the traditional way of catching fish with the help of cormorants in reed fences, the so-called dairies.

On the site of today’s Dojran Lake stretched a wide valley with lush meadows and diverse gardens. In a raised place there was a large spring. Next to the valley lived a beautiful girl whose name was Dojrana. Many boys fell in love in Dojrana, but unfortunately one Turkish man – Kaymakam. The beautiful girl could not imagine marrying him. Kaymakam started walking after her. He followed her every step of the way. He did not give her peace. Finding herself in a hopeless position, lest she should fall into his hands, she threw herself into the great spring. The source accepted her innocent body. To cover and sanctify it, it began to pour out. It covered the whole valley. In a short time the valley turned into a beautiful lake.
