Village Bozovce – Bozovce Lake – Peak Zalina – Skakalo Lake – Peak Skakalo

Skakalo is the mountain peak of Shar Planina, in the northwestern part of the Republic of Macedonia. It is an integral part of Shar Mountain and its height is 2,494 meters. At its foot is the glacial (glacial) Skakali Lake.

Skakalo Lake is one of the 27 natural glacial (glacial) lakes on the Shar Mountain. It is located at an altitude of 2258 meters at the foot of Skakalo peak, after which the entire surrounding area and Shara ridge are named. The lake has a depth of about 1.60 meters. The water is transparent, clear and impeccably clean but quite cold. The bottom of the lake is completely composed of silt and sand, so due to its small depth, the lake looks and has a white color from afar, which is why it is also called Jezeri i Bardh (White Lake) by the local Albanian population. Right above the lake there is a strong and cold spring, and the Skakalicka River flows out of the lake, which is a left tributary of Pena and flows into its upper source area between the Babasanica and Rafsha areas above the village of Bozovce.

Bozovce Lake (or Lokva, Sorupa, the locals’ name after the cirque of the same name) is the smallest glacial lake on Shar Mountain, which was not counted in the past even in the 27 glacial lakes of the massif itself, but as part of the Shar ponds. The lake is located northwest of Bozovce at an altitude of 2,107 meters. It stretches in a southwest-northeast direction. It is located in the Sorupa cirque, according to which the local population calls it Sorupa, while the names Bozovce Lake and Lokva were given by the scientific and professional public in photographs for the studies of the Shar Mountain National Park, and are unknown and not used by the locals. Immediately above the lake and cirque rises the peak Zalina, 2495 m high. A path leads to Lake Sorupa that starts from the wide dirt road from Bozovce in the Leshnica valley, which then turns into a narrow hiking trail at Bozovce sheephold that continues along the slope to the northwest.
