Kamenjane – a village in Bogovinje Municipality, in the area of Dolni Polog, in the vicinity of the city of Tetovo. Kamenjane is a large village located in the plain of the Polog valley on the right side of the highway Tetovo – Gostivar. It is located in a valley at the very foot of Shar Mountain, and the torrential Kamenjane River divides it into two parts. It is 7 kilometers south of the city of Tetovo. The area is small and covers an area of 5.9 km2. The settlement is flat and is located at an altitude of 500 meters. Kamenjane Riveris located on Shar Mountain, southwest of Tetovo, it passes through the village of Kamenjane and flows through the field, and at high water level it flows into Vardar. The eight waterfalls of Kamenjane Reka are different in height and width, according to many visitors, the last waterfall is the most attractive, but the highest waterfall is the seventh, which is about 12.5 m. No one remains indifferent to the beauty of the Kamenjane Waterfalls, so we can rightly count them as one of the most beautiful on Shar Mountain.

Tour

We discovered this tour quite by chance on the net, and decided to visit it due to the fact that the article mentioned 8 waterfalls in total with a groomed trail and the whole story seemed incredible.

We arrive in the morning in the village. Kamenjane – about 50 km from Skopje. We are not in a hurry like any other hiking tour to get up early in the morning because we know that the trail is short and we have enough time. We also received another tip from our friends when we were researching the location that in the village Kamenjane is home to the widely known burek shop Burektore Sac – or burek prepared under a peer, and the decision was made: first we go to burek and then to the waterfalls.

We drive from Tetovo on the local road to the village. Kamenjane – Sunday morning alone through the Tetovo villages we arrive at Burektore Sac: it is located in the center of the village and you cannot miss it because it is a well-known and visited place. The burek is really prepared in a traditional way under a peer on a part of the outdoor terrace where there are also several tables for sitting. There was Shkljkim who served us right away and the service is top notch, together with the burek we order home made yogurt so that the satisfaction is complete – we go back centuries to Macedonian traditional cooking.

With strong impressions from this culinary experience, we set off for the waterfalls. We park the vehicle about 500 m. from the Burek Shop and we continue along a dirt road towards the waterfalls. There are signposts on the entire route, but there is no classic marking, so we recommend careful monitoring of your GPS device. After passing 1 km, we arrive at the old mill, where grandfather Ljutvi welcomes us – to our delight, the mill was working at full steam and grandfather Ljutvi exhaustively explained to us what the whole mill craft looks like, which he inherited from his great-grandfathers. An amazing experience especially for children.

In a short time, the dirt road ends and a hiking trail begins instead with wooden stairs and wooden bridges along the Kamenjane Reka. The trail is quite steep in certain sections, but there are wooden steps that greatly facilitate movement through this beautiful canyon. And indeed, along the path there are waterfalls clearly marked with numbers through a dense forest where the sun rarely touches. The path is mostly in the shade due to the dense forest but also due to the configuration of the canyon. Next to most of the waterfalls, there are wooden tables and chairs – places to organize impressions and enjoy. For us, the most impressive and beautiful waterfall is the  waterfall no. 7 which is also the highest of all 8. The path is 4 km long and for the return there are two options: to return along the same path (not recommended) or the better option is a circular one, that is, joining and returning along the paved road to the village Jelovjane.

Put this tour high on your bucket list – one of the magical places in Macedonia that must be visited. The trail is fairly easy and manageable for all ages. The site is quite steep but secured with wooden stairs, bridges and wooden fences. Kudos to the locals who regularly take care and maintain it.
