In most of the natural values that Osogovo can boast of, the locality Ratkova Skala has a significant place. The rocky beauty, endowed with rare flora and fauna, overlooks the region from an altitude of 1,250 meters.

Due to the slowing down of Shtalkovichka River, the valley sides near the village. Ratkovica are large, staggered, rocky sections, which is why the locality itself is called Ratkova Skala. The interesting appearance of this locality inspired legends and stories that are still told today by the local population. Ratkova Skala, together with Orlov Kamen, is one of the most representative rocky areas of Osogovo, where you can find typical rock plants such as the red chervil (Sempervivum erythraeum), which is still only found in Belasica. Several interesting species of birds nest here (stone partridge, Egyptian vulture, peregrine falcon, leaf mouse, black stork). Ratkova Skala was one of the last nesting sites of the black vulture in Macedonia.

EAT, EAT RATKO LITTLE WHILE IT’S SWEET!

Legend has it that in the many caves in that scale there were eagles’ nests where little eagles hatched, and in some there were bees. It was assumed that many treasures from ancient times were also buried there. The locals from that area said that this ladder was named after a certain Ratko who often climbed into the caves to extract honey. Every day he stayed longer and longer. They warned him not to eat too much honey, so he wouldn’t get sick. They shouted to him: – Eat, eat Ratko while it’s sweet! Once he drank too much, then he got sick and fell into the ravine, from a height of about 300 m. The name Ratkova skala remained after him.

Ratkova Skala offers a beautiful view of the historical place of Svilanovo, where Nikola Karev died, but also towards Probishtip and Zletovo. Several local mines for non-metals that are not active at the moment are recognized on that part. Otherwise, the whole terrain is rocky. These are volcanic rocks which means a wealth of minerals and ore. On the other side, the Kratovo-Zletovo section begins, and the route of the three monasteries passed here in the past: Saint Joakim Osogovski, Saint Gavril Lesnovski and Saint Panteleimon.
