Korab Mountain

Korab – a mountain in Western Macedonia, on the border with Albania. Korab mountain has the highest point (peak) in R. Macedonia – Golem Korab, with an altitude of 2,764 meters above sea level. Korab is a mountain range that stretches south-north. Due to the unique natural features, the part of the mountain that enters the borders of Macedonia, in 1952 was recognized as part of the national park “Mavrovo”.

It rises in the northern part of the Korab mountain massif, on the stretch from the peak Sherupa (2,092 m) in the north, to the high mountain pass Deshat (1,959 m) in the south, with a length of 26 km. The direction of extension is meridian from north to south. The mountain ridge is clearly expressed along its entire length, in the northern part it is slightly rounded, and in the central and southern part it is quite sharply and weakly dissected. Above the mountain ridge rise several peaks whose height is over 2,000 m, and in 39 individual places over 2,500 m. The highest peak is the peak Golem Korab (2,753 m), which although belongs to the territory of the Mavrovo National Park – Republic of Macedonia, still does not belong to the Radika River watershed, but to the Proj Radomirs River watershed in neighboring Albania.

Korab Mountain is characterized by various relief forms. Beneath the mountain ridge are the original headwaters of several tributaries of the Radika River, which appears as an important drainage artery in the Mavrovo National Park, among which the most important are: Stirovica River, Ribnica River, Dlaboka River, most of the original headwaters of the Zhirovnichka River and others. In fossilized circuses there are a number of springs, and in some are permanent, periodic and occasional natural postglacial lakes.
